In addition to Brady’s maps/history he also emphasized the Pahoali’ili’i ‘auwai is one of the longest, active ‘auwai in Nu’uanu and is very urgent need of a major repair at the headwater. Without this project we are at risk of losing this ‘auwai permanently. We would lose all water entering from the stream, thus all water below will be dry. We have been reporting on this issue for over 15 years.
This fix needs to be done right with professional water engineers involved. A rough estimate is between $ 15-20,000
with 25 plus homes along this route spanning from below Kimo Bridge (Nuuanu Pali Rd) to Puiwa Lane and Park Street we have hopes we can raise the money with community support/fundraising….STAY TUNED!
This not only helps in preserving the flow but also fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility among residents.

Guest speaker Lisa Wong shares the history of the ʻauwai in Nuʻuanu, one of which runs right beside Hānaiakamalama! Explore the importance of these man-made canals in Hawaiʻi and the time and care that goes into keeping them flowing. Having been a Nuʻuanu resident for over four decades, Lisa Wong understands the importance of ʻauwai, having two running through her own property near Dowsett. When Daughters of Hawaiʻi member Shannon Wilson, and neighbor Tom Lalakea founded the “ʻAuwai Study Group” in the early 2000’s, Lisa became an active member. Now named Hui Mālama ʻAuwai O Nuʻuanu, Lisa helps lead the group and continues to share the history of the ʻauwai and organizing cleaning days, often leading with “E Mālama ʻoe I Ka ʻĀina, e Mālama ka ʻĀina ia ʻoe,” Take care of the land and the land will take care of you.
